The history of the jumpsuit
If you take it seriously, the jumpsuit was created a hundred years ago.
The designer is Thayat, an artist from Florence - the one pictured below, who created the first jumpsuit in 1919.
Thayat was originally designed as a practical garment for skydivers and aerial divers, ideal for jumping and fast movement, so it was called the Jumpsuit.
And jumpsuits shine in the fashion world, thanks to designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who brought the jumpsuits to the stage of high fashion after transforming them in the 1930s. (Elsa was a strong competitor to Coco Chanel at the time)
After that, more designers participated in the "remodeling" of jumpsuits. In the disco era, jumpsuits were the most popular, and many celebrities wore jumpsuits, generating unprecedented exposure.
In the 1967 film "Stage Door," Katharine Hepburn looked elegant in a silk jumpsuit.
In the early 1970s, Elvis Presley brought jumpsuits to the stage as part of the music world, and his signature jumpsuits in gorgeous colors also became classics with changing dance steps.
At the same time in the UK, David Bowie and his famous character Ziggy appeared in a dramatic stage jumpsuit, strong and avant-garde, which defined an era and became a precious fashion archive.
Among the artists who made a bold take on one-pieces on stage were Freddie Mercury, frontman of the rock band Queen.
Classification of jumpsuits
Although the jumpsuits are similar, there are many types of subdivisions, such as flight suits, police uniforms, racing suits and other special workers' clothing.
And the historic "Siren Suit"—those are jumpsuits that can be easily put on and taken off. During World War II, many people were forced to leave their homes, and during air raids, sirens sounded, and people would wear the suits to evacuate quickly, hence the name "siren suits". Winston Churchill often wore it during the war.
The first and most suitable category for men's daily wear is called - Boilersuit, which refers to those loose workwear that is completely covered except for the head and feet and is equipped with a belt. Also known as "Workwear" in North America and the UK.
In the 1920s and 1930s, these garments were also gender-equal thanks to their loose cuts and "no frills" designs.
American sportswear pioneer Vera Maxwell designed a onesie worn by millions of Rosie the Riveter (American women working in factories during World War II), whose outfits have become an iconic cultural reference and Symbol of empowerment to women.
In 1969, the white jumpsuit worn by the lead singer of the London rock band The Who was also a Boilersuit.
Looking at this item now, it has been injected with more relaxed and fashionable genes. Counting the appearance of Runway jumpsuit, you will find that it is mentioned almost continuously, the design is more open and bold, and there are not so many rules. And setting limits is also relatively more interesting.
